Nyonya kueh (spelled kuih in modern Malay) is easily available in Malaysia and Singapore. Which doesn't help many of us! What I'd like to do is begin compiling a list of the restaurants and cafes where kuih can be purchased. I'll make a start below, but I'm going to need your help!
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
If you're lucky enough to be in the Malaysian capital, there's a chain called Nyonya Colors specialising in premium Nyonya kuih. Their menu is a delight in itself!
London, United Kingdom
- Cafe Rasa Malaysia, Westfield Stratford City Ground Floor, Great Eastern Market, London E20 1EJ. Serves kuih dadar, kuih lapis, tapioca cake, ondeh ondeh and if the kuih you're looking for isn't on the menu, ask the owner Noor!
- Malaysia Hall Canteen, 30-34 Queensborough Terrace, London W2 3ST. Always stocks a good selection of kuih at very affordable prices.
- Pandan Bakery: a family-run online store that will deliver to your home! Four types of Nyonya kuih available: angkoo, kuih lapis (Chye Hoon's nine-layered kueh), pulut inti and kuih dadar. They have a stall at Putney Market too!
New York, USA
New York City: Rasa NYC, 25 West 8th Street, New York, NY 10011. Reputedly popular with visiting Malaysian politicians. Kueh is not on the menu but available on request. Tell the friendly owner you heard about Rasa from the author of The Woman Who Breathed Two Worlds!
California, USA
Anaheim: Seasons Kitchen USA, 641 N. Euclid Street, Anaheim, CA 92801. Kueh talam, kueh lapis and seri muka available on weekends, made by the owner's Nyonya aunt. Tell them you learnt about their restaurant from this website!
Do you run or know of a Malaysian restaurant serving Nyonya kuih? Please contact me so that your restaurant can be added to our list!
